Autonomous forklift ROI calculator

An autonomous forklift ROI calculator estimates the payback period and the manual-versus-automated cost of a warehouse automation project from your own operating figures: labour cost, shift pattern, operators and an adjustable throughput uplift. In the UK the same maths applies to AMRs and lifting robots, and every result on this page is driven entirely by the numbers you enter. There are no FlyWei prices or fixed savings built in; the tool only converts your inputs into time, ratio and index outputs.

Your operation

Enter your own numbers. Nothing is pre-filled with a FlyWei figure: the placeholders are neutral starting points you should replace with your real data.

operators
£ / operator-hour

Your own figure: wages, on-costs, supervision and overheads per operator-hour.

hours

%

Typical range 15 to 35%. Adjust to your operation. Illustrative modelling assumption only, NOT a FlyWei guarantee.

x annual labour

You supply this. Express your quoted automation investment as a multiple of one year of the manual labour cost above, e.g. 1.5x. The calculator never assumes a price.

Your results

Everything below is computed live from your inputs only, expressed as money you entered, time, a ratio and an index. No absolute FlyWei price or saving is shown anywhere.

Annual manual labour cost

£352,000

4,000 paid hours/operator/yr x 4 operators (your figures)

Payback period

14.4 mo

Your investment multiple expressed in time, relative to your own annual benefit.

Payback ratio (index)

1.2x

Investment divided by annual benefit. Below 1x = under a year on your numbers.

Automation investment

£528,000

Derived from your 1.5x multiple of annual labour cost: your figure, not ours.

3 / 5 / 7-year cost index

Cumulative manual labour cost is the baseline at 100. Each bar shows your one-off automation investment as an index against that growing manual baseline; lower is more favourable. Indices only; no currency figures are invented.

How this calculator works

1 · Annual manual labour

Operators x labour cost per hour x hours per shift x shifts per day x operating days per year. All your figures.

2 · Your investment

You enter automation cost as a multiple of one year of that labour cost. We never assume a robot price.

3 · Time, ratio and index

Payback in months and as a ratio, plus a 3 / 5 / 7-year manual-vs-automated index with manual fixed at 100.

Ready for real figures? FlyWei models leasing, hire and purchase against your volumes across autonomous forklifts, lifting robots and AMRs. See 3, 5 and 7-year leasing, autonomous forklift hire and the cost guide.

ROI calculator: frequently asked questions

How do I calculate autonomous forklift or AMR ROI?+

Start from your own operating figures: the number of manual forklift or material-handling operators you would automate, their fully-loaded labour cost per hour, the hours per shift, shifts per day and operating days per year. Multiply these to estimate annual manual labour cost, then compare that against your automation investment, expressed here as a multiple of one year of that labour cost. The payback period is the investment multiple expressed in months. This calculator does exactly that maths on your inputs and never assumes a price for you.

What is a typical payback period for warehouse automation?+

Payback varies widely with shift pattern, labour cost and how much of the work is automated, so any single figure would be misleading. Automation that runs across multiple shifts usually models a shorter payback than a single-shift site, but the only payback that matters is the one this calculator produces from your own numbers and your own quoted investment. FlyWei does not publish a universal payback figure because it depends entirely on your site.

What throughput uplift should I assume?+

Throughput uplift is the productivity improvement automation can add versus the manual baseline. The calculator defaults to an illustrative 25% and lets you move it across a typical 15 to 35% range so you can test conservative and optimistic scenarios. This is an adjustable assumption for modelling only, not a FlyWei performance guarantee. Your actual figure depends on your flows, layout and duty cycle, which a site survey would assess.

Does this calculator use FlyWei's actual robot prices?+

No. The calculator contains no FlyWei prices and no fabricated savings. It works purely from the numbers you enter, and the automation cost is something you supply as a multiple of your own annual labour cost. For a real, costed comparison, request a free site survey and fleet-sizing quote: FlyWei will model leasing, hire and purchase against your actual volumes.

How does leasing or hire change the payback maths?+

Leasing over 3, 5 or 7 years, or hire with the term agreed per site, replaces the one-off investment with a monthly rate that already includes maintenance, the M4 fleet manager and UK support. In that case compare the monthly rate against the monthly labour and productivity benefit rather than looking for a payback point. The calculator models the purchase case; ask for a leasing quote to see the monthly version side by side. Leasing and hire are subject to credit approval.

Where do the automation investment figures come from?+

From your own quote, not from this page. What drives the number is the robot class and count, the top modules or forks, the software and WMS integration, the site survey findings and the support term. The autonomous forklift cost guide on this site walks through each factor. The free UK site survey turns those factors into a fleet plan and a quote, typically 8 to 14 weeks before go-live.
